AIR: Artists Interaction and Representation

Membership network for visual and applied arts offers practical professional benefits and much more.

Backed up by a-n The Artists Information Company, AIR (Artists' Interaction & Representation) was established in 2006 and has nearly 11,000 artist members.

Here's what we do:
- keep artists in touch with arts jobs, news, opportunities, and with each other, through our website, regular ebulletins and events
- meet regularly with policy bodies such as the Arts Council to advocate on artists' behalf
- provide specially tailored professional benefits, like our free public liability insurance cover.

Following the introduction of free £5m public and products liability insurance for UK-based AIR members in 2007, brokers Hencilla Canworth Ltd and a-n The Artists Information Company have developed the Artists' Insurance Policy (AIP) for practising visual and applied artists. Providing cover for artwork and materials, studio and contents, and employers' liability at a highly competitive rate, policy benefits are tailored to reflect the diversity of work practice and professional requirements of visual and applied artists.

Artists can choose an 'off the peg' option or request a personalised quote. For further information about the Artists' Insurance Policy (AIP) visit www.a-n.co.uk/AIR_insurance, or to find out how to become an AIR member, visit www.a-n.co.uk/subscribe or call +44 (0) 191 241 8000.

co-pilot.net has been conceived and managed by SPACE and Solar Associates. It is supported by the Arts Council of England.

Established in 1968, SPACE produces dynamic environments where individuals and communities can engage in creative processes. SPACE supports artistic production, widens participation in visual arts and media, fostering the creative potential of individuals and communities. It fulfils its mission through providing affordable studio space and innovative artistic, educational, media and training programmes that benefit both individuals and communities.

co-pilot.net is an online resource designed to collate knowledge and experiences and enable open discussion for those working at the intersection of art, technology and social change. Anyone is welcome to join, share and exchange views, resources, skills and experiences. co-pilot.net features case studies of convergence between spheres of art, technology and social change as well as interviews, podcasts, videos and lists of useful resources. Users can add content, comment on topics and direct people to their own or other interesting projects.

There currently exists an extensive unmapped landscape of socially engaged work that inspires change through art, technology and participation. This includes working with older people, young people and the socially excluded through the ever-expanding field of new and emerging creative technologies. It is impossible to provide a one-size-fits-all toolkit for a terrain as complex and diverse that is still rarely discussed in a free and open fashion.

co-pilot.net provides the framework to aggregate the wealth of experience and knowledge held by talented individuals and groups to inspire discussion, exchange and action.

Escape Artists

Escape Artists is an arts and education charity that was established in 1996. Our purpose is to build a bridge from the margins to the mainstream; employing the arts as tool for personal development and social change.

Escape Artists fulfils its purpose at the meeting point of clients, contractors, artists and stakeholders - providing a service which achieves tangible educational and developmental results through professionally managed artistic activity. We don't just see our workshops or productions as a one-off. We want to ensure that the vital importance of people's creativity in promoting health and social welfare can continue to be developed in sustainable forms.

On a more general level, our whole reason for being is to provide access to the arts within some of the country's most disadvantaged communities; such as those within Young Offender Institutions, Secure Hospitals, Prisons, Mental Health Institutions, Hostels for the Homeless, Hospices and elsewhere.

Escape Artists is one of the few dedicated organisations with the experience, resources and training to be able to work with all parties within these sectors, both nationally and internationally.

Forum Peer Mentoring Groups - Artquest

Forum is Artquest's peer mentoring group project for established visual artists and craftspeople in London. Forum provides a space for established visual artists and craftspeople to engage in constructive, rigorous and critical discussion on their practice.

Artquest initiated Forum in 2004 in response to a lack of available peer mentoring sessions within the London visual art and craft communities for established practitioners. A secondary benefit of the project was the opportunity for artists to network and socialise informally. Artists and craftspeople present their work and concerns about their practice to the rest of their group in a relaxed, informal atmosphere, networking across disciplines and exploring lines of enquiry outside their usual practice.

Artists seeking to set up peer mentoring groups may be interested to read the Artquest's Setting up a Peer Mentoring Group Guidelines in the Manage your career section of the Artquest website.

Weekend Arts College
The Weekend Arts College provides opportunities for artists and educators to extend their training both within their own specialist discipline and when working with young people. In addition WAC can certificate some of the work carried out by students on these courses.

Professional arts training is available, called The Future Proof programme, and is designed to enable participants to acquire the necessary skills to equip them for arts development work, whether in schools or community settings, and as a consequence of this, to promote the development of this field as a recognised source of employment opportunities and as a progression route for young people who aspire to work within the arts.

Practitioners will work together with experienced tutors in their field to acquire new skills, exchange techniques and experiment with ways to develop good practice in their particular art form. The programme is divided into four main areas: Generic skills looking at design and planning, curriculum delivery and evaluation & assessment; art form skills, looking at issues such as diversity & accessibility, technique vs. creativity and working with mixed ability groups; Professional skills looking at IT (basic & advanced), desktop publishing, internet use, personal management and finance; and additional skills looking at first aid, health & safety, risk assessment and disability issues. Advice and guidance is also available on a one-to-one basis.

The National Federation of Artists' Studio Providers (NFASP)

The NFASP's main role is to help artists interested in setting up and running studio groups and organisations to achieve their aims. We know how important studios are to artists, and we appreciate how hard it can be for artists to find affordable space to work.

There is a high demand for studios for all kinds of creative activity, especially the most affordable artists' studios that our members provide, and so you might be asked to join a waiting list. There are often shorter-term opportunities, or ways of sharing studios, so do enquire about this when you get in touch with a provider.

Q9: What process must I go through to register as self-employed, and how does this impact on the tax I pay?
Q10: What copyright issues should I be aware of?

---------

Q1: How do I go about getting an exhibition of my work?

* Exhibiting visual art, particularly in London, means thinking creatively about the context of your work, where you want to exhibit (in a gallery – commerical or public, alternative space, public space etc), and what you want to get out of it. Commercial galleries will only take on artists that they think will make them money (as is their function!), and public galleries will often have a policy of only showing 'mid-career' artists. If you decide to exhibit in galleries, research the space you wish to exhibit in thoroughly to ensure it is suitable. A full list of London's galleries can be found at
http://www.newexhibitions.com
, or on the Artquest website at http://www.artquest.org.uk/exhibit/venues/sources.htm.

* Visit a-n The Artists' Information Company at http://www.a-n.co.uk for practical background information. The Art World Directory published by Art Review is also a useful read and it's worth visiting the Art Fair held annually in January at the Business Design Centre or Frieze Art Fair held in October in Regent's Park for a flavour of some of the regional and international as well as London-based spaces.

* [space 44] is a new, very affordable exhibition space in Dace Road. High ceilings, natural light, low rates. Visit www.spacestudios.org.uk for details.

---------

Q2: Do you have suggestions for possible marketing strategies or advice?

* Tips on self-promotion can be found on Artquest's website in the Exhibiting and Selling section at http://www.artquest.org.uk/exhibit/introduction.htm.

----------

Q3: Are there any London-based networks of artists where I could show my work and get feedback?

* SPACE, in conjunction with the Whitechapel Art Gallery hosts monthly Peer Critique sessions where artists are invited to present and discuss their work with their contemporaries. Facilitated by SPACE Training and Whitechapel Art Gallery Education Departments. Booking essential: http://www.whitechapel.org/ and http://www.spacestudios.org.uk/

----------

Q4: Can I send CD ROMS of my work instead of slides to galleries and exhibition opportunities?

* Check with the gallery first and see what their submissions procedure is, and likewise if it is a call for an exhibition opportunity follow the guidelines that they ask for. Many applications are viewed by a panel of selectors and a) it can be hard for several people to view a monitor screen properly; b) not all organisations have up-to-date software to read the CD ROM properly. The monitor may also not be calibrated properly and if your work is colour specific your work may not be properly represented. If in doubt back up with good slides or photos.

----------

Q5: Where can I find studio space in London?

* Artquest lists virtually all studio providers for visual artists in London at http://www.artquest.org.uk/exhibit/introduction.htm

* Ask yourself what you really need and how often you are going to need it – do you really need a studio 24/7 if not you may be able to find a sublet or studio share. Some organisations are now offering open access to particular facilities e.g SPACE offers open access in Digital Arts and Moving Image and will soon have woodworking, ceramics and metal work open access facilities. See www.spacestudios.org.uk

----------

Q6: How can I get funding for my visual arts practice?

* Artists have a variety of funding needs when producing or displaying, or for general support in their working lives as artists. See the Artquest website for information on all types of funding at http://www.artquest.org.uk/money/funding/funding.htm. Artquest also provides access to FunderFinder software.

* Come to the Accessing Funding course at SPACE for a breakdown of how to, where to and why to: http://www.spacestudios.org.uk/

* Reed In Partnership gives one to one support on Grant finder to Hackney Residents only.

* a-n The Artists' Infomation Company provides advice and guidance through the magazine, website and telephone helpline. See http://www.a-n.co.uk

* The Arts Council also provide sources of information for funding as well as providing sums of money. See http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/funding/

----------

Q7: As an artist with a disability is there any support that I can expect to receive?

* The Arts Council, London can support artists through its access unit in gaining funding, support and advice.

* London Disability Arts Forum seeks to strengthen and develop the image of disability arts and culture. Amongst its activities is the Disability Film Festival. Read more on the LDAF website: http://www.ldaf.org/.

* Shape London provides support and training for artists with disabilities. Read more on the Shape website: http://www.shapearts.org.uk/

* Artsadmin offers a bursary scheme for individual disabled artists who live in Greater London and wish to work with digital media. Read more on the Artsadmin website: http://www.artsadmin.co.uk/.

* See the Disability page in the Resources section of this website for further information.

----------

Q8: Where can I get paid work or work experience in the art world?

* For paid work keep an eye out for Monday and Saturday's Guardian newspaper Job section.

* a-n magazine / website also advertises work opportunities across the country. See http://www.a-n.co.uk

* Many organisations will list vacancies on their web site.

* SPACE has a large volunteer programme in digital and moving image arts, arts administration, public arts etc. Email spaceplace@spacestudios.org.uk for details.

* Other organisations e.g. Chisenhale, Camden Arts Centre, Tate, Whitechapel Art Gallery often have work experience and internship opportunities.

* Many commercial galleries need invigilators and administrators on a paid or voluntary basis. Word of warning: Only commit to what you feel you can manage – one day a week is often enough as a starting point, make sure you are learning/gaining something from the experience and if possible see if the organisation can cover your food and travel expenses.

* If you are in receipt of JSA or similar check informally with your local benefits office in case there are restrictions to the number of hours that you can spend volunteering.

----------

Q9: What process must I go through to register as self-employed, and how does this impact on the tax I pay?

* For a guide to self-employment, see the Artquest guide 'seven steps to self employment' on the Artquest website at: http://www.artquest.org.uk/money/advice/advice.htm.

----------

Q10: What copyright issues should I be aware of?

* Copyright can be a highly complex concept to guard yourself with. In the main, you never automatically relinquish copyright unless you sign a contract giving someone else copyright over a certain piece of your work. For more information, contact the Designers' and Artists' Copyright Association (DACS) through their website at http://www.dacs.org.uk, and read the information on copyright on the Artquest site at http://www.artquest.org.uk/index.htm.
