Moving Matters: Supporting Disabled Dance Students in Higher Education by Sarah Whatley
This resource pack will be a useful reference for anyone who is involved in teaching and supporting the teaching of dance students in higher education. The pack also provides useful information for individuals, agencies and organisations that are supporting disabled dance practitioners prior to entering higher education or after graduation so it will be a valuable resource for professional organisations and those in other education sectors. Whilst the material has a clear focus on dance and the particular challenges associated with practical dance activities, the pack may also be useful to other educators.
In Part One, Sarah Whatley summarises the work that has taken place so far at Coventry University. There are notes on teaching and learning strategies, information about working with a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) in the studio, suggestions for modifying and adapting curricula and ideas for assessment methods and student support. There are some personal reflections provided by students and those who support their learning.
Part Two focuses on two conferences held at Coventry University during 2007, beginning with an outline of the days and then transcriptions or reports of the various presentations. The 75-page booklet has an accompanying DVD, which includes footage from the two days, interviews with speakers and students as well as extracts from some of the performances that were presented as part of the conferences.
The aim is to provide a broad perspective on this area of work together with some ideas about how the work could be taken forward. It is hoped that the pack might encourage an expanding network of practitioners and more collaborative working across the sector.

Equity
Equity is the only Trade Union to represent artists from across the entire spectrum of arts and entertainment. Formed in 1930 by a group of West End performers, Equity quickly spread to encompass the whole range of professional entertainment and its membership includes actors, singers, dancers, choreographers, stage managers, theatre directors and designers, variety and circus artists, television and radio presenters, walk-on and supporting artists, stunt performers and directors and theatre fight directors. Although a Trade Union, Equity is not politically affiliated and so does not make payments to any political party. This puts Equity in the strong position of being able to lobby with impunity. It is affiliated to the Trades Unions Congress and Equity delegates attend the annual TUC conference as a means of bringing performers' issues to a wider audience.
The main function of Equity is to negotiate minimum terms and conditions of employment throughout the entire world of entertainment and to endeavour to ensure these take account of social and economic changes. Its looks to the future as well, negotiating agreements to embrace the new and emerging technologies which affect performers so satellite, digital television, new media are all covered. In addition it operates at an international level through the Federation of International Artists which Equity helped to establish, the International Committee for Artistic Freedom and through agreements with sister unions overseas.
In addition to these core activities, Equity strives to provide a wide range of services for members and so they are eligible for many benefits including a job information service and contract vetting. They also provide legal and welfare advice, royalties collection services, advice on copyright and insurance services.

Independent Dance
Moving ideas into action. Independent Dance is an artist-led organisation providing a responsive framework to support, sustain and stimulate dance artists in their ongoing development as professionals.
It provides a specialist and coherent programme offering opportunities to learn, deepen enquiry, share practice and exchange ideas as part of an interdependent international community.
The programme includes daily release-based technique classes; weekly Monday night Improvisation; intensive workshops such as: Sunday Specials bodywork days, Winlab, London International Summer School; discussions as part of The Thursday Group and the choreographic Feedback Forum; and the Deborah Hay Solo Performance Commissioning Project. ID's regular programme is based at Siobhan Davies Studios where all facilities are available to ID participants.
Two of our regular activities:
Release-based technique class ~ 10am to 12noon ~ Open to professionals only
The daily class provides a learning environment to support the mindful curiosity and physical intelligence of the dancer, reflecting our belief in the value of diverse body-mind techniques and how they can facilitate individual development.
Each teacher brings to the class a unique amalgamation of their experiences in forms such as BMC, Aikido, Feldenkrais, Yoga, Alexander, Capoeira, Skinner Releasing, Improvisation / Contact Improvisation and Chi Gong, to name a few.
Monday Night Improvisation ~ Mondays 6:30PM to 8:30PM ~ Open to all levels
Improvised dance is about exploring the movement potential of our bodies and the creative potential of our minds. As well as enjoying the movement facility already available to us, we will use exercises to broaden our physical and mental range. In these classes, we create an atmosphere where work and play co-exist, and where watching and talking support our dancing.
Classes cost £4 each or £35 for a ten class card. Admittance is on a first come, first served basis. There are 4 bookable places for morning classes for those travelling from outside London or who may not be able to arrive early during popular class periods.
Siobhan Davies Studios is wheelchair accessible and the Independent Dance programme is open to disabled and non-disabled professional dance artists.

StoneCrabs Theatre Company
StoneCrabs is a theatre and arts production company. StoneCrabs understand theatre to involve all art forms, fusing together forms of world theatre, dance, music and crossing borders between culture and the arts.
StoneCrabs has a mission to enrich people's lives through theatre. The core ethos is to nourish, to inspire, and to challenge. StoneCrabs is a multi-cultural team producing plays from United Kingdom and abroad.
As part of their commitment to the twin beliefs that education is dialogue and theatre is core to the community, StoneCrabs offers exploratory workshops in techniques designed to develop and build the performative vocabulary of the actor/performer and community facilitator. Workshops are usually based around their current production and seek to utilise the varied skills of those involved.
