AIR: Artists Interaction and Representation

Membership network for visual and applied arts offers practical professional benefits and much more.

Backed up by a-n The Artists Information Company, AIR (Artists' Interaction & Representation) was established in 2006 and has nearly 11,000 artist members.

Here's what we do:
- keep artists in touch with arts jobs, news, opportunities, and with each other, through our website, regular ebulletins and events
- meet regularly with policy bodies such as the Arts Council to advocate on artists' behalf
- provide specially tailored professional benefits, like our free public liability insurance cover.

Following the introduction of free £5m public and products liability insurance for UK-based AIR members in 2007, brokers Hencilla Canworth Ltd and a-n The Artists Information Company have developed the Artists' Insurance Policy (AIP) for practising visual and applied artists. Providing cover for artwork and materials, studio and contents, and employers' liability at a highly competitive rate, policy benefits are tailored to reflect the diversity of work practice and professional requirements of visual and applied artists.

Artists can choose an 'off the peg' option or request a personalised quote. For further information about the Artists' Insurance Policy (AIP) visit www.a-n.co.uk/AIR_insurance, or to find out how to become an AIR member, visit www.a-n.co.uk/subscribe or call +44 (0) 191 241 8000.

Moving Matters: Supporting Disabled Dance Students in Higher Education by Sarah Whatley

This resource pack will be a useful reference for anyone who is involved in teaching and supporting the teaching of dance students in higher education. The pack also provides useful information for individuals, agencies and organisations that are supporting disabled dance practitioners prior to entering higher education or after graduation so it will be a valuable resource for professional organisations and those in other education sectors. Whilst the material has a clear focus on dance and the particular challenges associated with practical dance activities, the pack may also be useful to other educators.

In Part One, Sarah Whatley summarises the work that has taken place so far at Coventry University. There are notes on teaching and learning strategies, information about working with a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) in the studio, suggestions for modifying and adapting curricula and ideas for assessment methods and student support. There are some personal reflections provided by students and those who support their learning.

Part Two focuses on two conferences held at Coventry University during 2007, beginning with an outline of the days and then transcriptions or reports of the various presentations. The 75-page booklet has an accompanying DVD, which includes footage from the two days, interviews with speakers and students as well as extracts from some of the performances that were presented as part of the conferences.

The aim is to provide a broad perspective on this area of work together with some ideas about how the work could be taken forward. It is hoped that the pack might encourage an expanding network of practitioners and more collaborative working across the sector.

Clore Leadership Programme (Clore Duffield Foundation)

An initiative of the Clore Duffield Foundation, their aim is to help to train and develop a new generation of leaders for the cultural sector here in the UK. Each year they assist a number of
Clore Fellows to undertake an individual programme of learning, work, research, training, and secondment, designed to develop their leadership skills and experience.

The development of leadership and other transferable skills, practical work-based experience, research on a specific project of practical value to your area of work, and mentoring.

Clore Leadership programme has five elements...
Developing Leadership
Following a conference where the fellows are announced. An initial meeting will be arranged during the summer to discuss the candidate's needs and to start to plan your secondment, research, mentoring and tuition. A two-week residential leadership course lays the foundation for you to build and improve your leadership skills throughout the year, and enable you to get to know the
other Fellows on the programme. There will be a second residential course for all Fellows.

Developing Skills
A range of tuition opportunities will be available to individuals, small groups or the full cohort of Fellows. These will include, for example, presentation skills, media awareness, marketing, fundraising and governance. For some of your tuition, the Foundation will provide funds for you to attend a choice of open courses in universities, business schools or specialist
organisations.

Secondment
At the core of the programme is a three to four month secondment to an organisation very different from the candidate's current, in which you will manage a high level project. The Clore Foundation will agree with you the organisation which best
suits your needs, interests and objectives. You may want to link this practical experience to your period of research.

Research
During the Fellowship, you will investigate in depth an aspect of culture which has practical relevance to your field of work. You will be supervised by the higher education institution most appropriate for your research proposal. Whatever your knowledge
or educational background, you will receive guidance at the appropriate level on methods of research and will have opportunities to share your findings with others.

Mentoring
As a Fellow, you will have a personal development plan and will receive support and advice from the Director and Deputy Director of the Clore Leadership Programme as well as from a specially selected mentor. Regular meetings will be held to review progress and discuss any changes to your programme. You may have access to coaching when you make the move from the Fellowship programme back to the work place.

Equity

Equity is the only Trade Union to represent artists from across the entire spectrum of arts and entertainment. Formed in 1930 by a group of West End performers, Equity quickly spread to encompass the whole range of professional entertainment and its membership includes actors, singers, dancers, choreographers, stage managers, theatre directors and designers, variety and circus artists, television and radio presenters, walk-on and supporting artists, stunt performers and directors and theatre fight directors. Although a Trade Union, Equity is not politically affiliated and so does not make payments to any political party. This puts Equity in the strong position of being able to lobby with impunity. It is affiliated to the Trades Unions Congress and Equity delegates attend the annual TUC conference as a means of bringing performers' issues to a wider audience.

The main function of Equity is to negotiate minimum terms and conditions of employment throughout the entire world of entertainment and to endeavour to ensure these take account of social and economic changes. Its looks to the future as well, negotiating agreements to embrace the new and emerging technologies which affect performers so satellite, digital television, new media are all covered. In addition it operates at an international level through the Federation of International Artists which Equity helped to establish, the International Committee for Artistic Freedom and through agreements with sister unions overseas.

In addition to these core activities, Equity strives to provide a wide range of services for members and so they are eligible for many benefits including a job information service and contract vetting. They also provide legal and welfare advice, royalties collection services, advice on copyright and insurance services.

Escape Artists

Escape Artists is an arts and education charity that was established in 1996. Our purpose is to build a bridge from the margins to the mainstream; employing the arts as tool for personal development and social change.

Escape Artists fulfils its purpose at the meeting point of clients, contractors, artists and stakeholders - providing a service which achieves tangible educational and developmental results through professionally managed artistic activity. We don't just see our workshops or productions as a one-off. We want to ensure that the vital importance of people's creativity in promoting health and social welfare can continue to be developed in sustainable forms.

On a more general level, our whole reason for being is to provide access to the arts within some of the country's most disadvantaged communities; such as those within Young Offender Institutions, Secure Hospitals, Prisons, Mental Health Institutions, Hostels for the Homeless, Hospices and elsewhere.

Escape Artists is one of the few dedicated organisations with the experience, resources and training to be able to work with all parties within these sectors, both nationally and internationally.

The Independent Cinema Office is a national organisation that aims to develop and support independent film exhibition throughout the UK. The ICO works in association with independent cinemas, film festivals, film societies and the regional and national screen agencies.

We provide professional training for people working in exhibition who want to develop existing skills as well as for people wishing to enter the sector. Courses cover a wide range of practical issues including programming, PR, marketing and audience development.

Our website includes a page listing job vacancies in cinemas, film festivals and independent distributors, many of which are not advertised in the national press. The ICO itself has occasional internships for enthusiastic individuals interested in cinema exhibition.

Our other activities include putting together touring programmes of films which can be booked for screenings by venues and organisations; and organising a biannual Screening Days event for independent exhibitors to increase the access programmers have to films pre release. We also run an enquiries service for the non-theatrical sector via a dedicated email address: enquiries@independentcinemaoffice.org.uk.

Copies can be ordered via the Coventry University Online Store - go to www.coventry.ac.uk/researchnet/d/279/a/2280 and follow the direct link.

Weekend Art College

The Weekend Arts College provides opportunities for artists and educators to extend their training both within their own specialist discipline and when working with young people. In addition WAC can certificate some of the work carried out by students on these courses.

Professional arts training is available, called The Future Proof programme, and is designed to enable participants to acquire the necessary skills to equip them for arts development work, whether in schools or community settings, and as a consequence of this, to promote the development of this field as a recognised source of employment opportunities and as a progression route for young people who aspire to work within the arts.

Practitioners will work together with experienced tutors in their field to acquire new skills, exchange techniques and experiment with ways to develop good practice in their particular art form. The programme is divided into four main areas: Generic skills looking at design and planning, curriculum delivery and evaluation & assessment; art form skills, looking at issues such as diversity & accessibility, technique vs. creativity and working with mixed ability groups; Professional skills looking at IT (basic & advanced), desktop publishing, internet use, personal management and finance; and additional skills looking at first aid, health & safety, risk assessment and disability issues. Advice and guidance is also available on a one-to-one basis.
